Knight’s Tour: play the chess puzzle online

One knight. Every square. Can you find a route without visiting the same square twice?

Choose a 5 × 5, 6 × 6, 7 × 7 or 8 × 8 board. Practise your route or race the clock in Challenge mode — free to play, with no sign-up.

How to play Knight’s Tour

  1. Choose your board and mode. All four board sizes are available straight away. The knight starts in the top-left corner.
  2. Press Start. The timer begins and your starting square counts as the first square visited.
  3. Move in an L shape. Go two squares horizontally and one vertically, or two vertically and one horizontally. Tap or click a highlighted destination.
  4. Visit every square exactly once. You cannot land on a square you have already visited. The knight can jump over other squares.
  5. Complete the board. You can finish anywhere; you do not need to return to your starting square.

Practice mode

Explore different routes with an Undo move button. If you get stuck, step back and try another direction. You can see your time, but Practice results do not enter the leaderboard.

Challenge mode

Complete the board without undoing a move. Finish a valid tour, enter a nickname and submit your time to the leaderboard. Both modes highlight legal moves; Challenge mode removes the undo option.

From 5 × 5 to the full chessboard

  • 5 × 5: 25 squares — a compact place to start.
  • 6 × 6: 36 squares — more room to explore.
  • 7 × 7: 49 squares — a longer route to plan.
  • 8 × 8: 64 squares — the full chessboard challenge.

Every board here can be completed from the chosen starting square. A larger board means more squares, but it is not automatically a harder puzzle: the route you choose makes a difference.

Knight’s Tour and The Devil’s Plan

Recognise the puzzle from The Devil’s Plan? A version of Knight’s Tour appeared as a hidden-stage challenge in the second season of the Netflix strategy show.

Here you can try the classic puzzle yourself, starting with a 5 × 5 board or choosing a larger challenge. This is an independent version by Mathinar, not an official Netflix or The Devil’s Plan game.

A few tips before your next attempt

  • Look one move ahead. Before you tap, think about where the knight could go next.
  • Watch the corners and edges. They have fewer possible connections, so avoid leaving them stranded.
  • Notice what went wrong. In Practice mode, use Undo to test another route instead of starting from scratch every time.

Getting stuck is part of the puzzle. Each attempt gives you a little more information for the next one.
